Kannappa Nayanar (originally named Thinnadu / Dinna), a hunter chieftain born in Andhra Pradesh, was believed to be the reincarnation of Arjuna from the Mahabharata. Deeply devoted to Lord Shiva at Srikalahasti, he worshipped in his innocent, childlike way by offering wild game. When Lord Shiva tested his faith by causing blood to stream from the Shiva Lingam's eye, Kannappa unhesitatingly carved out his own eye with an arrow and placed it on the Lingam. When the second eye began bleeding, he placed his foot near the spot to guide his hand and prepared to pluck his second eye out. Moved by his boundless love, Lord Shiva manifested, restored his sight, and elevated him as one of the celebrated 63 Nayanmar saints.
